Detroit's Veterans Day events

Yes, today is Detroit's veterans day. Nearly 700,000 veterans are planning to pay tribute to the state's.


Here are some of metro Detroit's Veterans Day events today;

Macomb

• CLINTON TOWNSHIP: Resurrection Cemetery is to dedicate memorial tablets bearing the names of deceased veterans at 1 p.m. The cemetery is at 18201 Clinton River Road.

• MT. CLEMENS: The city's public library is to welcome Maj. Gen. Edward Mechenbier, a former Vietnam prisoner of war, at noon in the auditorium, 150 Cass Ave.

• STERLING HEIGHTS: A city-sponsored ceremony is to be held at 11 a.m. at the Parks and Recreation Center, 40620 Utica between 18 Mile and Dodge Park roads. District Judge Steve Sierawski, a veteran, is to speak. There is to be a vocal performance and bugler.

Oakland

• AUBURN HILLS: Thomas M. Cooley Law School is to host a program featuring local veterans and refreshments at 5 p.m. in Room 145 on the campus, 2630 Featherstone Road.

• BERKLEY: The second annual all-you-can-eat Appreciation Luncheon held by the Disabled American Veterans/Oakland County Chapter 19 is to be held at 12:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 2079 Twelve Mile. • HOLLY TOWNSHIP: The Great Lakes National Cemetery is to host a Veterans Day observance at 11 a.m. Brig. Gen. Michael Peplinski, commander, 127 Wing, Selfridge Air National Guard Base, is to be the keynote speaker. Veterans are urged to wear their medals and ribbons. The cemetery is at 4200 Belford Road. • MADISON HEIGHTS: A plaque engraved with the names of nearly 150 Chinese-American veterans from Michigan and the Toledo area is to be unveiled at noon at the Chinese Community Center, 32585 Concord Drive in Madison Heights.

• ROCHESTER HILLS: The Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm, 1005 Van Hoosen Road, is to hold two military lectures. The 7-8 p.m. lecture is on the Normandy invasion and, from 8 to 9 p.m., a veteran is to recall his tours of duty in Vietnam. Admission is $5; $3 for seniors. Veterans, students and museum members get in free.

Wayne

• CANTON: A Salute to Service event is to be at 7 p.m. at the Village Theater, 50400 Cherry Hill. Doors open at 6 p.m. Michigan Military Moms is to collect items such as white cotton tube socks and AT&T international calling cards for service members overseas.

• DETROIT: The 25th annual memorial observance for Civil War troops from the 102nd U.S. Colored Infantry is to be held at 10 a.m. in Detroit's Elmwood Cemetery, 1200 Elmwood at East Lafayette. It is to be held in Section S of the cemetery, where 18 members of the 102nd Colored Infantry are buried. • The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is to host a free concert at 11 a.m. featuring the United States Naval Academy Gospel Choir, at 315 W. Warren Ave. The choir is comprised of midshipman from throughout the county.

• PLYMOUTH: Local veterans groups are to hold a brief ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Plymouth Community Veterans' Park at Main and Church.
